T.37 is an ITU standard which deals with sending fax messages using email. It is also referred to as "Internet fax" or "Store-forward-fax". A fax machine supporting T.37 will send a fax to an email address by converting the document to a TIFF-F image, attaching it to an email (using the MIME format), and sending the document (using SMTP). The destination fax receives the email and prints the attached document. To interface with regular fax machines:

| - Die ITU-T-Empfehlung T.37 mit dem englischen Titel Procedures for the transfer of facsimile data via store-and-forward on the Internet (zu Deutsch Verfahren für die Übertragung von Telefax-Daten über Store-and-Forward im Internet) spezifiziert ein Netzwerkprotokoll zur Übertragung von Fax-Nachrichten in einem Store-and-Forward-Modus. Das Fax wird in einer TIFF-Datei per E-Mail übertragen. Die Empfehlung wurde 1998 erarbeitet und beinhaltet den damals erreichten Stand, sodass nicht alle Leistungsmerkmale von Faxgeräten der Gruppen 3 und 4, die statt des Internets das PSTN oder das ISDN nutzen, berücksichtigt sind. Es ist zusammen mit der Empfehlung T.38 eine Basisempfehlung zur Übertragung von Faxen über das Internet. Zurzeit arbeitet ITU-T an Verbesserungen, wobei das Arbeitsprogramm unter anderem Folgendes umfasst:
* neue Modulationsverfahren,

* A T.37-compliant fax machine includes legacy fax functionality to send to regular fax numbers and requires a phone line for this.
* To find the destination faxes email address, the RFC 4143 standard is in development, which allows a fax machine to use a destination fax number to look up an alternative email address. (en)
