The Swartberg Pass on the R328 runs over the Swartberg mountain range (black mountain in English) which runs roughly east–west along the northern edge of the semi-arid area called the Little Karoo in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It's the only road access to Gamkaskloof.

La route du col fut construite par des forçats sous commandement de Thomas Charles Bain (1830-1893) à partir de 1881 et inaugurée le 10 janvier 1888. Ce fut le dernier ouvrage d'importance qu'il supervisa. Les constructions de pierre sèche supportant la route en lacets sont particulièrement impressionnantes. Au sommet se trouve par ailleurs l'unique accès routier à la vallée isolée de Gamkaskloof, également connue sous le nom de The Hell. (fr)
