Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is a 1997 space combat game developed by Totally Games for LucasArts. It is the third installment of the X-Wing series. Featuring several technical advancements over the original releases of its predecessors, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter runs on Windows, requires a joystick, features a CD audio soundtrack, supports high-resolution graphics, and brings texture mapping to the ship models of the in-flight game engine. Techniquement plus évolué que les deux jeux précédents, XvT fonctionne sous Windows, requiert un joystick (alors qu'il était possible de jouer aux autres avec une souris), comporte un CD de la bande-son, une résolution graphique élevée ; XvT propose également un mode multijoueur et un comptage des points et récompenses du joueur, qui a également la possibilité de choisir, pour chaque mission, son escadron, son type de vaisseau, et ses armes. Les réactions au sujet de ce jeu vidéo ont été mitigées. En effet, c'est le seul de la série des X-Wing conçu uniquement pour les modes multijoueur et/ou individuel seulement. Il se caractérise également par l'absence d'histoire et de scénarios cohérents.

While all content could be played single-player, it is the only part of the series designed primarily for multiplayer, and it lacked a story-driven campaign. LucasArts later released an expansion called Balance of Power to satisfy popular demand for story-driven campaigns, and to further expand on the multiplayer features. (en)

Il difetto principale di questa versione è la mancanza di una trama che coinvolga il giocatore. Questa lacuna è stata colmata con l'uscita dell'espansione Balance of Power.
