The Soviet sale of Hermitage paintings in 1930 and 1931 resulted in the departure of some of the most valuable paintings from the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad to Western museums. Several of the paintings had been in the Hermitage Collection since its creation by Empress Catherine the Great. About 250 paintings were sold, including masterpieces by Jan van Eyck, Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens, Raphael, and other important artists. Andrew Mellon donated the twenty-one paintings he purchased from the Hermitage to the United States government in 1937, which became the nucleus of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Transaction relativement discrète et peu documentée, elle permet, entre autres, de former en 1937 le noyau de la National Gallery of Art de Washington, D.C.. Cette série de transactions prend place au sein d'un vaste processus de liquidation de biens nationalisés enclenché depuis la révolution de 1917 et qui prend fin en 1938. Всего из залов и запасников музея было отобрано 2880 картин, 350 из которых — произведения значительной художественной ценности, а 59 — шедевры мирового значения; некоторые из них находились в музее ещё со времён его основания Екатериной Великой. Небольшая часть полотен, не найдя покупателя, всё же вернулась в музей, но около 50 знаменитых шедевров — включая работы таких мастеров, как Ян ван Эйк, Тициан, Рембрандт и Рафаэль, — навсегда покинули Россию. В результате картин Ван Эйка в Эрмитаже (и в России в целом) не осталось вообще, а ряд других художников первого ряда (Рафаэль, Боттичелли, Перуджино) ос (ru) Продаж картин з колекції Ермітажу — розпродаж полотен з колекції Ермітажу урядом Радянської Росії у 1929—1934 роках.
