- La dénomination société de protection des animaux (SPA), désigne, en France, plusieurs centaines d'associations de protection et de défense des animaux, indépendantes les unes des autres, dont la plus ancienne, la Société protectrice des animaux (SPA), fondée en 1845, et qui n'est pas fédérée. 270 autres associations sont regroupées au sein de la Confédération Nationale Défense de l'animal, créée en 1926 et appelée jusqu'en 2018 Confédération Nationale des SPA de France. - L'association Société protectrice des animaux (ou SPA) est, en France, la plus ancienne des sociétés de protection des animaux, sociétés œuvrant dans le domaine de la protection animale. Créée le 2 décembre 1845 et reconnue d’utilité publique en 1860, l'association recueille les animaux en détresse, abandonnés, perdus ou maltraités dans ses 55 refuges et 7 maisons SPA sur le territoire français. Les animaux sont pris en charge par l’équipe du site à la suite d’un abandon, d’un retrait pour maltraitance ou d’une sortie de fourrière. Les animaux (chiens, chats et NAC : nouveaux animaux de compagnie) sont identifiés, stérilisés, vaccinés, hébergés, soignés, éduqués et socialisés pour être proposés à l’adoption. (fr)
