Social housekeeping, also known as municipal or civil housekeeping, was a socio-political movement that occurred primarily through the 1880s to the early 1900s in the Progressive Era around the United States. The movement expanded the customary view of a woman's domain as the home, to portray the community as extension of this sphere of influence. The language of social housekeeping served to justify increased female participation in socio-political matters.
