It was named after the six degrees of separation concept and allowed users to list friends, family members and acquaintances both on the site and externally; external contacts were invited to join the site. People who confirmed a relationship with an existing user but did not go on to register with the site continued to receive occasional email updates and solicitations. Users could send messages and post bulletin board items to people in their first, second, and third degrees, and see their connection to any other user on the site. (en)

Celkem na ní bylo registrováno tři a půl milionu osob. Tato sociální síť byla jedna z prvních, která umožňovala svým uživatelům vytvářet profily, přidávat a zvát své přátele, vytvářet skupiny a prohlížet profily ostatních uživatelů. Fondé sur la théorie des six degrés de séparation, ce service, ancêtre de Facebook et de LinkedIn, proposait aux internautes de créer leur profil, d'entrer en relation avec leurs proches, amis, familles, collègues et de développer leur propre réseau social numérique. Les utilisateurs pouvaient publier sur des informations sur des bulletin boards, envoyer des messages à leurs contacts, ainsi qu'aux contacts de leurs contacts, et ce sur deux niveaux de séparation. Le recrutement de nouveaux membres se faisait sur le principe de l’envoi d’invitations par les membres déjà inscrits, principe aujourd’hui courant, mais révolutionnaire pour l’époque. Le réseau comptait près de 3,5 millions d’inscrits à son apogée. L’absence de photographies ainsi que les vitesses réduites de connexion pour les utilisateurs ont sensiblement ralenti son développement. Le site est vendu en 1999 à YouthStream Media Networks pour un montant de 125 millions de dollars. En 2001, le site largement déficitaire ferme. Ce déficit était en grande partie dû à des investissements lourds en personnel (près de 100 employés), en logiciels et en matériel. It was followed by more successful social networking sites based on the "social-circles network model" such as Friendster, MySpace, LinkedIn, XING, and Facebook. MacroView (later renamed to SixDegrees Inc.), the company that developed the site, was founded by CEO Andrew Weinreich in May 1996 and was based in New York City. At its height, SixDegrees had around 100 employees, and the site had around 3,500,000 fully registered members. The site was bought by in December 1999 for $125 million. SixDegrees shut down one year later on December 30, 2000, then brought back up a few years later. (en)
