Simple commodity production (German: einfache Warenproduktion), also known as petty commodity production, is a term coined by Friedrich Engels to describe productive activities under the conditions of what Karl Marx had called the "simple exchange" of commodities, where independent producers trade their own products. The use of the word simple does not refer to the nature of the producers or of their production, but rather to the relatively simple and straightforward exchange processes involved.

In een toestand van eenvoudige warenproductie produceren kleine zelfstandigen met eigen middelen waren voor de markt, die ze vervolgens met elkaar uitruilen volgens het schema W–G–W: waren voor geld, geld voor waren, zonder verandering van waarde. Smith en Marx betogen dat prijsvorming in deze situatie moet geschieden via concurrentie om inkomen, zodat uiteindelijk de evenwichtsprijs van ieder goed recht evenredig is aan de arbeidstijd die besteed wordt aan de productie ervan (eenvoudige arbeidswaardetheorie). Eerst de invoering van kapitaal maakt dat deze waardebepaling door arbeid verstoord raakt, omdat nu een deel van de geproduceerde waarde door de kapitaalbezitter/grondbezitter als winst/grondrente wordt opgeëist, en omdat naast de concurrentie om inkomen nu een concurrentie om winst optreedt. In Marx' termen geldt dan het schema G–W–G', waarin G' een groter geldbedrag voorstelt dan G; dit is de belangrijkste eigenschap van de kapitalistische productiewijze, productie om winst. Het concept eenvoudige warenproductie dient bij Smith en Marx een analytisch doel: door kapitaal en grondeigendom weg te denken uit de markteconomie, kunnen de effecten van marktwerking afzonderlijk bestudeerd worden. Engels gaf er een historische lezing aan: hij meende dat eenvoudige warenproductie een werkelijk bestaande, voor-kapitalistische markteconomie weerspiegelde. In de twintigste eeuw werd Engels' lezing een gangbare interpretatie van Het Kapitaal (bijvoorbeeld verkondigd door Mandel in diens populaire inleidingen marxistische economie).
