The signiferi of the Roman legions were the ranks entrusted with various tasks to do with standard-bearing. Early in the Roman Republic the single rank signifer performed all these tasks but later in the Empire the tasks became more specialist with different ranks created for specific tasks, including the aquilifer (eagle standard bearer for the whole legion), imaginifer (bearer of the portrait of the god-like Emperor), and the draconarius (bearer of a cavalry standard).

Deze symbolen waren heel belangrijk in het Romeins leger. De standaarddragers gingen pas op stap als het volledig legioen een kamp verliet. Durant l'époque dite manipulaire, il y en avait un par manipule, puis après la réforme de Caius Marius il y en avait un pour chaque cohorte et pour chaque centurie dans une légion.Tous les porteurs d'étendard et de drapeaux portaient ce nom avant l'époque manipulaire, puis "signum" ne désigna plus que le symbole d'une unité ensuite, les autres porteurs recevront des noms particuliers pour chaque étendard...

Als er een standaard verloren ging deed het Romeinse leger er alles aan om het terug te winnen. Zo maakte het Romeinse leger een tocht door Duitsland om de standaards terug te veroveren die ze verloren hadden in de slag bij het Teutoburgerwoud (9 n.C.). De standaards werden gedragen door jongere mannen. Meestal waren ze licht bewapend of onbewapend. Velen stierven op het slagveld. Het was voor een standaarddrager een hele eer dit te mogen doen. (nl)
