Η τομή καθιστά δυνατό να δει και να ερμηνεύσει ο αρχαιολόγος τα χαρακτηριστικά γνωρίσματα του τετραγώνου, όπως αναπτύχθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια του χρόνου. Η ημιτομή είναι η συνηθισμένη μέθοδος με την οποία το μισό του τόπου ανασκάπτεται και το υπόλοιπο αφήνεται ως έχει. Μεγάλα χαρακτηριστικά γνωρίσματα όπως ερείπια, θαμμένα κτήρια κ.λπ. χρειάζεται να τετραγωνιστούν με την χρήση κάναβου, προκειμένου να γίνει μεθοδικότερη η καταγραφή και η πρόοδος της ανασκαφής. Οι τομές χρησιμοποιούνται μαζί με τα σχέδια για την καταγραφή αρχαιολογικών θέσεων. Συνήθως σχεδιάζονται σε κλίμακα 1:10 ή 1:20, το ύψος τους συνδυάζεται με το σχετικό ύψος της θέσης και καταγράφεται ο προσανατολισμός. Επίσης, απαιτείται τήρηση φωτογραφικού αρχείου (el)
