- Le seamless branching (traduit aiguillage automatique par le Bureau de la traduction) est un procédé utilisé sur les supports numériques DVD ou Blu-Ray, et permettant de proposer au spectateur différentes versions d'un contenu vidéo sans manipulation spéciale de sa part. Par exemple, le choix entre une version courte ou longue (Director's cut par exemple) d'un film, se fait par le spectateur au menu et ensuite le support va, de manière transparente jouer le même film, puis sauter ou rajouter les scènes selon la version choisie, sans que le spectateur ait de coupure. Des films comme Le Roi lion ou Abyss proposent ce procédé. (fr)

Statt alle Versionen einzeln in vollständiger Länge auf der Disc zu speichern, befinden sich jeweils der allen diesen Versionen gemeinsame Hauptteil und die voneinander abweichenden Szenen nur einmal auf der Disc. Während der Wiedergabe rangiert das Abspielgerät unterbrechungsfrei innerhalb dieser „verzweigten“ Datenpfade und fügt sie „nahtlos“ zusammen zu der gewählten Schnittfassung (daher der Name). DVDs mit Seamless Branching sind eher selten, da die Umsetzung technisch anspruchsvoll ist und besonders kosten- und zeitintensiv sein kann. Die DVD Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition beispielsweise sollte in Deutschland ursprünglich wie ihre amerikanische Vorlage auch mit Seamless Branching gemastert werden. Weil die dafür spezialisierte Firma jedoch auf längere Zeit ausgebucht war und es somit zu erheblichen Verzögerungen bei der Veröffentlichung der DVD gekommen wäre, entschloss man sich, auf Seamless Branching zu verzichten. Dies hat den Nachteil, dass man nur die erweiterte Langfassung ansehen kann und nicht wahlweise auch die Kinofassung ohne die zusätzlichen Szenen. Weitere Beispiele sind Star Wars, die Alien-Tetralogie und einige Disney- und Pixar-Titel auf DVD. Dank Seamless Branching bekommt der Zuschauer den zur gewählten Sprachfassung dazugehörigen Vorspann und/oder Abspann bzw. auch auf die jeweilige Sprachfassung abgestimmte Szenen, die feste Texteinblendungen enthalten, zu sehen. Das Seamless Branching wird vermehrt bei Blu-ray Discs angewandt. (de)

Le terme est aussi utilisé pour un autre technique qui permet de proposer, pour des scènes contenant des textes dans une langue, une traduction en temps réel dans la langue que le spectateur aura sélectionné au lancement de la vidéo. Par exemple, une scène avec un plan montrant une affiche sur un mur avec du texte dans une langue, sera remplacé, sans que le spectateur s'en rende compte, par le même plan avec l'affiche dont le texte est traduit dans la langue du spectateur. Ceci est rendu possible bien sûr, si l'éditeur du film a préalablement créé ces images avec les traductions adéquates. (fr)
- Seamless branching is a mechanism used on DVDs and Blu-ray Discs to allow the player to jump to a different scene after finishing one. The most common purpose is to have several versions of a scene within one film, without having to store the entire film on the disc several times. A popular example is the Platinum Edition DVD of The Lion King, where the user can select between the original theatrical version and an extended version. The two versions differ only in one scene (the "morning report"). The DVD player is instructed to play the film normally up to this scene, then jump to the appropriate scene as selected by the user before the commencement of the film, and then jump back to play the rest of the film. The user normally does not notice this jump, hence the word seamless. Larger scale examples of the same technique are seen in the 2000 Ultimate Edition DVD of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the 2007 DVD rerelease of Blade Runner and the Platinum and Diamond Edition DVDs of Beauty and the Beast in which three different cuts of the films are playable from the same discs. Another possible use of seamless branching is for the localisation (translation) of on-screen visible text. The Star Wars DVDs with their opening crawl are a prime example. Normally, only the audio track of films is translated into other languages, but when text central to the plot is visible on-screen, the scene may be created once for every language, and the DVD player can be instructed to select the appropriate version of the scene depending on the user's language preference. However, for this purpose a technique called multi-angle is used more often. (en)
