It forms part of the civil parish of Laxton, and is situated on the north bank of the River Ouse, downstream from York, Selby and Goole. Saltmarshe is approximately 3 miles (5 km) south-east from Howden and 21 miles (34 km) south-east from the county town of York. Saltmarshe Hall is a Grade II* listed 19th-century country house on the western edge of the hamlet. Saltmarshe railway station is on the Sheffield to Hull Line. It is named after Saltmarshe, but is 1 mile (1.6 km) to the north near the village of Laxton.
