Vityaz (Russian: Витязь) is a research vessel that was built in 1939 by Deutsche Schiff- und Maschinenbau AG, Bremen, Germany as Mars for Neptun Line, Bremen. She served with the Kriegsmarine during World War II and was seized by the United Kingdom in 1945. She was renamed Empire Forth for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT).

Il a été construit en 1939 par la DeSchiMAG de Brême pour la compagnie allemande Neptun Linie comme cargo et lancé sous le nom de Mars. Puis le navire a servi avec la Kriegsmarine comme navire-hôpital pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et a été saisi par le Royaume-Uni en 1945. Po zakończeniu II wojny światowej radziecka oceanografia borykała się z brakiem specjalistycznych jednostek do badań naukowych i musiała korzystać z okrętów wojennych. Pierwszą pełnomorską jednostką zbudowaną z myślą o powstałym w 1946 Instytucie Oceanografii Akademii Nauk ZSRR był "Witiaź" zwodowany w 1949. Był on następcą dwóch wcześniejszych statków o tej samej nazwie: korwety, którą Nikołaj Mikłucho-Makłaj w 1871 popłynął badać wody Nowej Gwinei oraz jednostki, która w latach 1886-1889 odbyła podróż dookoła świata i dokonała cennych badań na Pacyfiku.
