Ayant été fondé en 1860 sous la dénomination de « 2nd Battalion, Volunteer Militia Rifles of Canada », littéralement « 2e Bataillon, Carabiniers de la Milice volontaire du Canada », il est le plus ancien régiment d'infanterie en service ininterrompu au Canada.
