In 2009, Portage Area School District residents' per capita income was $15,142, while the median family income was $38,351. Portage Area School District operates two schools: 'Portage Area Elementary School (Grades PreK–6) and (Grades 7–12). In 1972 the district, along with five other neighboring districts in Cambria County, established the Admiral Peary Vocational-Technical School near Ebensburg, Pennsylvania which is the county seat of Cambria County. High school students may choose to attend the vocational technical school for training in the construction and mechanical trades. The Appalachia Intermediate Unit IU8 provides the district with a wide variety of services like specialized education for disabled students and hearing, background checks for employees, state mandated recognizing and reporting child abuse training, speech and visual disability services and professional development for staff and faculty.
