Związek ten jest cieczą, w której gazy takie jak tlen oraz dwutlenek węgla rozpuszczają się bardzo dobrze. W temperaturze pokojowej w 100 ml perflubronu rozpuszcza się 65 ml tlenu i 228 ml dwutlenku węgla, co pozwala na oddychanie perflubronem nasyconym tlenem. Ze względu na tę właściwość trwają próby nad zastosowaniem perflubronu oraz innych perfluoroweglowodorów w nurkowaniu głębinowym bez dekompresji, gdzie miałby zastąpić mieszanki tlenowe. Planuje się go też stosować w medycynie przy ratowaniu noworodków lub osób z uszkodzonymi płucami (np. w wyniku pożaru). (pl) Le bromure de perfluorooctyle, également appelé Perflubron en pharmacie et 1-bromoperfluorooctane de façon générale, est un fluorocarbure de formule brute C8F17Br. Il s'agit d'un liquide incolore et inodore, chimiquement stable et biologiquement inerte, ayant la capacité de dissoudre d'importantes quantités d'oxygène O2 et de dioxyde de carbone CO2. Il est employé comme produit de contraste en imagerie par résonance magnétique, tomodensitométrie et échographie. Il a également été utilisé comme substitut sanguin ainsi qu'en ventilation liquidienne partielle pour enfants prématurés en insuffisance respiratoire. Het wordt in de geneeskunde gebruikt als een bloedsubstituut (een hemoglobinevervanger) of bij de behandeling van beschadigde longen.
