In the early days of Ancient Rome, perduellio (Latin: [pɛrdʊˈɛllɪ.oː]) was the term for the capital offense of high treason, although it was not well defined. The form of action on this charge changed over the course of the Roman republic. The word later became just an intensifier for the more common treason charge (maiestas). It was set down plainly in the Law of the Twelve Tables as follows: The Law of the Twelve Tables orders that he who has stirred up an enemy or who has handed over a citizen to the enemy is to be punished capitally. Se utilizaba cuando un general cometía una ofensa militar, como rebelarse contra el Estado. Los casos de «perduellio» eran juzgados por las Asambleas Romanas. Els duumviri perduellionis van actuar fins al començament de l'època de l'Imperi, però el nom de perduellio sembla que ja havia caigut en desús. La perduellio als seus inicis, era considerada un delicte religiós, i el reu d'aquest crim havia de morir per fer propicis els déus. Normalment se'l flagel·lava fins a morir i se'l penjava.
