Nel panic selling gli investitori vogliono letteralmente disfarsi delle loro posizioni senza tenere in considerazione il prezzo, l'imperativo è uno solo: limitare i danni! Il problema del panic selling è che spesso l'emozione e la paura giocano un ruolo primario nella scelta di uscire da una posizione e manca quindi ogni forma di razionalità, se il panic selling è inserito in un trend ribassista già in atto ed esteso solitamente è l'ultima fase ribassista prima di un'inversione del trend al rialzo. La vendita su larga scala e a qualsiasi prezzo porta a tracolli delle quotazioni con violente oscillazioni dei prezzi che i mercati finanziari cercano di limitare usando dei meccanismi di sicurezza come, per esempio, la sospensione delle contrattazioni per eccesso di ribasso.
