Igual que d'altres ospedali venecians, la Pietà va ser fundada (el 1346) com a hostatgeria per a croats. Quan les croades van perdre importància, va anar canviar gradualment per esdevenir una institució benèfica que acollia orfes i noies abandonades. Era també un lloc on els interns estudiaven música i que va guanyar un gran prestigi en aquest aspecte especialment durant els segles xvii i xviii. (ca)

- The Ospedale della Pietà was a convent, orphanage, and music school in Venice. Like other Venetian ospedali, the Pietà was first established as a hospice for the needy. A group of Venetian nuns, called the Consorelle di Santa Maria dell’Umiltà, established this charitable institution for orphans and abandoned girls in the fourteenth century. By the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the Pietà – along with the three other charitable Ospedali Grandi – was well known for its all-female musical ensembles that attracted tourists and patrons from around Europe. - ピエタ慈善院（Ospedale della Pietà、オスペダーレ・デッラ・ピエタ）は、ヴェネツィア共和国の救貧院、孤児院、音楽院。 1346年に孤児や棄児を養育するための慈善機関として設立された。のちに棄児はスカフェータと呼ばれる赤ちゃんポストによって預けられるようになった。預ける親の多くはいずれは引き取りに来ることを前提とし（多くの場合は実現しなかったが）、形見の品を赤ちゃんに添えた。女子は結婚しない限り、生涯をここで過ごした。男子も受け入れて船大工や石工などの職業訓練を行なったが、介護が必要などのよほどの事情がない限り16歳になるとここを去った。一方、女子は音楽的才能を発芽させれば、8歳から10歳にかけて集中的に訓練を始め、慈善院付属音楽院の「合奏・合唱の娘たち」の一員に育て上げられた。 「娘たち」という名前からは、ともすれば少女だけからなる女性オーケストラや合唱団が想像されるが、実際には構成メンバーは11歳から70歳にまで及び、平均年齢は40歳に近かった。演奏や歌唱は音楽院内のホールまたは教会で行なわれた。教会の聖歌隊席は祭壇の反対側に一箇所、側壁に向かい合うように二箇所あったが、下の観客から「娘たち」の姿かたちがはっきり見えないように、美しい飾りをちりばめた鉄製の格子に囲まれていた。ジャン＝ジャック・ルソーも聴衆としてこれを記録している。 (ja)
- Het (Pio) Ospedale della pietà ("(Devote) Gasthuis van Liefdadigheid") was een klooster, weeshuis en muziekschool inéén in Venetië. Net als andere Venetiaanse ospedali werd de Pietà gesticht als opvanghuis voor behoeftigen. Een groep Venetiaanse nonnen, de Consorelle di Santa Maria dell’Umiltà ("Zusters van de heilige Maria van de Eenvoud"), vestigden de Pietà in 1346 het als liefdadig instituut voor weeskinderen en verlaten moeders met kinderen. Aanvankelijk werden zuigelingen via de "scaffetta" (vertaling: plank), een vrij kleine nis in de muur, aan de instelling afgegeven. Grotere kinderen werden daar al gauw, in geval van nood, soms zelfs met enig geweld doorheen geduwd. Het is vandaag niet meer bekend waar deze nis zich bevond. - O Ospedale della Pietà é um convento, orfanato e escola musical para mulheres de Veneza, na Itália, que se tornou famoso no século XVIII pelo alto nível de educação musical que dava às suas internas e por ter sido um dos principais locais de trabalho de Vivaldi. O Ospedale ainda funciona nos dias de hoje, embora com um grupo muito menor de alunas. Os edifícios originais na Riva degli Schiavoni foram parcialmente substituídos por um hotel. (pt)
- Ospedale della Pietà – klasztor, sierociniec i szkoła muzyczna dla dziewcząt w Wenecji działające w XVII–XVIII w. Początkowo było to miejsce odpoczynku dla pielgrzymów zmierzających do Ziemi Świętej. Po epoce wojen krzyżowych ośrodek przekształcono w klasztor, szpital i sierociniec. W XVII-wiecznej Wenecji działały cztery takie ośrodki. Każdy z nich miał swój zespół wokalny i instrumentalny wykonujący muzykę religijną, a złożony wyłącznie z dziewcząt mieszkających w sierocińcu. Były to zespoły na bardzo wysokim poziomie artystycznym. Ospedale były instytucjami charytatywnymi, utrzymywanymi z datków. Doskonałe koncerty przynosiły sławę, hojność mecenasów, przychylność władz i chwałę Republice Weneckiej. (pl)
