Ornithomancy (modern term from Greek ornis "bird" and manteia "divination"; in Ancient Greek: οἰωνίζομαι "take omens from the flight and cries of birds") is the practice of reading omens from the actions of birds followed in many ancient cultures including the Greeks, and is equivalent to the augury employed by the ancient Romans. Ornithomancy in some form has been found globally among a wide variety of pre-industrial peoples.

Se basaba en predicciones a partir del comportamiento de las aves (ornito-): el vuelo, las migraciones, los cantos, etc. El más famoso ornitomántico es Tiresias, que era ciego y debía llevar a un aprendiz o lazarillo con él que le describiera sus observaciones de las aves. En un escolio de Proclo del verso final de la obra de Hesíodo Trabajos y días (Έργα και ημέραι), se lee que algunos hacían derivar de ese verso la fe en esta práctica, que consideraba engañosa Apolonio de Rodas. Dans la classification de Platon, elle relève de la divination par signes, par opposition à la divination inspirée. Elle était très pratiquée en Grèce ancienne ainsi qu'à Rome. En Grèce, il s'agissait essentiellement de l'observation de l'apparition fortuite d'oiseaux, à un moment-clé. | - الطيرة وهي التشاؤم، وهي عادة كانت شائعة عند العرب في الجاهلية، وسمي التشاؤم بها لأن العرب في الجاهلية كانوا أكثر ما يتشاءمون من الطيور، كالغراب أو البوم أو العقعق وغيرها، بل من كل الطيور وذلك إذا سارت في اتجاه معين، ولذا غلب الاسم عليه. والتشاؤم يكون مرئيا أو مسموعا أو معلوما. أصل الطيرة من إنَّ العرب في الجاهلية كان إذا خرج أحدهم لأمر قصد عش طائر، فهيجه، فإذا طار من جهة اليمين تيمن به ومضى في الأمر، ويسمون الطائر «السانح»، أما إذا طار جهة اليسار تشاءم به ورجع عما عزم عليه، ويسمى الطائر هنا «البارح». وقد حرمت الطيرة في الإسلام وهي باب من أبواب الشرك، عن عبد اللَّهِ بن عَمْرٍو قال: قال رسول اللَّهِ ﷺ: «مَن رَدَّتْهُ الطِّيَرَةُ من حَاجَةٍ فَقَدْ أَشْرَكَ». وعن أبي هريرة، قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: «لا عدوى، ولا طيرة».
