Open-source architecture is an emerging paradigm that advocates new procedures in imagination and formation of virtual and real spaces within a universal infrastructure. Drawing from references as diverse as open-source culture, modular design, avant-garde architectural, science fiction, language theory, and neuro-surgery, it adopts an inclusive approach as per spatial design towards a collaborative use of design and design tools by professionals and ordinary citizen users. The umbrella term citizen-centered design harnesses the notion of open-source architecture, which in itself involves the non-building architecture of computer networks, and goes beyond it to the movement that encompass the building design professions, as a whole.

| - الهندسة المعمارية المفتوحة للعامة (بالإنجليزية: Open-source architecture) هي أنموذج أو حركة معمارية جديدة تدعو إلى نشر المعلومات الخاصة بالهندسة المعمارية والتصاميم المعمارية وكل ما يتعلق بها على كافة الوسائط لكي تصل إلى كل الناس في العالم وبذلك يستطيع أي شخص إنتاج فراغات معمارية ومباني (سواء في الطبيعة أم في الواقع الافتراضي) بالاستعانة بقاعدة بيانات عالمية حرة ومفتوحة. يستمد هذا الأنموذج المعماري فكره من عدة مراجع وتجارب سابقة مثل ثقافة المصادر المفتوحة (الحرة)، والتصميم المعياري، والنظرية المعمارية الريادية، والخيال العلمي، ونظرية اللغة، والجراحة العصبية وغيرها من المراجع. إن هذا الأنموذج المعماري المفتوح للعامة يسعى إلى خلق بيئة مفتوحة ومتكاملة يمكن الوصول إليها من قبل المختصين والعامة على حد سواء. حيث يمكنهم الاطلاع على التصاميم وعلى الأدوات التصميمية لاستخدامها في التصميم المعماري بل وبناءها من خلال تحميل المخططات وطباعتها باستخدام آلة الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد أو باستخدام أدوات القص المصنعية الإلكترونية وغيرها من الطرق. إن مفهوم الهندسة المعمارية المفتوحة للعامة قد يندرج ضمن مفهومين أعم وأشمل ألا وهما المصادر المفتوحة (الحرة) (بالإنجليزية: Citizen-Centred design) أولاً ومفهوم التصميم الذي يتمحور حول المستخدم) (بالإنجليزية: Citizen-Centred design) ثانياً.
