Znajduje się w tworze siatkowatym rdzenia przedłużonego, grzbietowo względem oraz do przodu i przyśrodkowo od jądra pasma rdzeniowego nerwu trójdzielnego. Nazwę tej struktury anatomicznej wprowadził Jacob Augustus Lockhart Clarke w 1851. Uszkodzenie jądra dwuznacznego powoduje zaburzenia połykania i fonacji. (pl)

- Der Nucleus ambiguus ist eine Ansammlung von Nervenzellen (Kerngebiet) im Bereich des Tegmentum der Medulla oblongata. Er ist ein viszeromotorischer Kern, dessen Axone über die Hirnnerven Nervus glossopharyngeus, Nervus vagus und Nervus accessorius das Gehirn verlassen. Die Nervenzellen steuern damit Muskeln des Gaumens, des Rachens und des Kehlkopfs an. Der Nucleus ambiguus ist als viszeromotorischer Hirnnervenkern Ausgangspunkt für efferente, myelinisierte Nervenfasern der zuvor genannten Hirnnerven. (de)
- El núcleo ambiguo (nucleus ambiguus en latín) es un conjunto de neuronas localizadas en la parte caudal del tronco del encéfalo. Está constituido por una columna de neuronas embebidas en la formación reticular de la médula oblongada. - The nucleus ambiguus ("ambiguous nucleus" in English) is a group of large motor neurons, situated deep in the medullary reticular formation named by Jacob Clarke. The nucleus ambiguus contains the cell bodies of neurons that innervate the muscles of the soft palate, pharynx, and larynx which are associated with speech and swallowing. As well as motor neurons, the nucleus ambiguus contains preganglionic parasympathetic neurons which innervate postganglionic parasympathetic neurons in the heart. (en)
- Il Nucleo Ambiguo decorre lungo tutto il bulbo e si colloca nella colonna motrice somatica speciale, posta ventralmente rispetto alle altre colonne motrici del bulbo. Pur trattandosi di una colonna somatica, parte delle fibre che originano a questo livello sono destinate a organi viscerali quali laringe e faringe. Dal Nucleo Ambiguo originano diversi nervi: -IX paio, nervo glossofaringeo: la componente motrice del glossofaringeo è per lo più di tipo viscerale e trae origine dal nucleo salivatorio inferiore. Le poche fibre provenienti dal Nucleo Ambiguo innervano solo il muscolo stilofaringeo. (it)
