Nikhef is the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics that performs research in particle physics and astroparticle physics. Amongst others, it is a research partner of the CERN institute in Switzerland and a member of the European Gravitational Observatory. Nikhef is a collaboration between the Dutch Research Council (NWO), University of Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Radboud University, University of Groningen, Maastricht University and Utrecht University. The current director is Stan Bentvelsen. Nikhef is located at the Amsterdam Science Park in Watergraafsmeer in the Netherlands.

Die Abkürzung Nikhef steht eigentlich für den alten Namen des Instituts, Nationales Institut für Kernphysik und Hochenergiephysik (Nationaal instituut voor kernfysica en hoge energie-fysica). Der Name wurde geändert, nachdem mit der Schließung der hauseigenen Elektronenbeschleuniger (MEA; AmPS) 1998 die experimentelle Kernphysik in den Hintergrund trat. Das Nikhef ist zum Beispiel an Experimenten am Large Hadron Collider des CERN beteiligt (und an der Entwicklung des LHC Computernetzwerks (LHC Computing Grid) zur Prozessierung der Daten in Petabyte Größenordnung) aber auch in Untersuchung kosmischer Strahlung und Astroteilchenphysik (wie dem Antares Neutrinoteleskop). Die Computer am Nikhef werden auch für Forschungen in der Astrophysik und zum Beispiel für Hirnforschung und Medikamentenentwicklung eingesetzt. Am Nikhef ist auch einer der sieben Knoten des Amsterdam Internet Exchange. (de)

This acronym is no longer used and the name was changed to Nationaal instituut voor subatomaire fysica (National Institute for Subatomic Physics). The name Nikhef is preserved to maintain name recognition (now with only the N capitalised). It also was the host of the third website in the world, starting in February 1992.
