Anders als der Name es vermuten lässt, war Newstead niemals eine Abtei, sondern nur ein Priorat der Augustiner-Chorherren. Trotzdem wird die Anlage schon seit dem 15. Jahrhundert so genannt. Sie gelangte nach ihrer Auflösung im 16. Jahrhundert in den Besitz der Adelsfamilie Byron, die das Kloster zu einem Landsitz (English country house) umgestaltete. Bekannt wurde das Anwesen durch den englischen Dichter Lord Byron, der das bis dahin kaum veränderte Landschloss 1798 erbte.
