Established in April 1857, the Newark Police Department (NPD) is the primary law enforcement agency serving Newark, New Jersey, and the largest municipal law enforcement agency in New Jersey. As of December 2017 the force had 1,146 officers. In 2014, a federal investigation found that the NPD "engaged in a pattern of unconstitutional practices, chiefly in its use of force, stop-and-frisk tactics, unwarranted stops and arrests and discriminatory police actions." As a consequence, the city entered into a consent decree, agreeing to a federal monitoring program and comprehensive reforms of the NPD. (en)
