The Mokohinau Islands (Pokohinau) are a small group of islands that lie off the northeast coast of New Zealand's North Island. The islands are 100 km (62 mi) northeast of Auckland, 21 km (13 mi) northwest of Great Barrier Island and approximately 52 km (32 mi) east of Bream Head. The main islands of the group include Fanal Island (Motukino), Burgess Island (Pokohinu), Flax Island (Hokoromea), and Trig Island (Atihau). Most of them are managed by the Department of Conservation as nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries. Landing is not allowed without a permit, with the exception of , much of which is managed as a scenic reserve by the Department of Conservation. Elles sont exemptes de nuisibles pour les mammifères et se régénèrent de façon naturelle à l'instar des îles du golfe de Hauraki. Les îles Mokohinau abritent un certain nombre des plus petites espèces en voie de disparition, telles que lOligosoma townsi, l'Oligosoma alani et le (en), espèces endémiques ainsi que de nombreuses espèces végétales en voie de disparition. Historiquement, les îles étaient souvent visitées de façon saisonnière par les Maoris pour leur (en) , récoltant des poussins de pétrels pour se nourrir . Aujourd'hui, les principales attractions des rares touristes sont les eaux très claires où abondent les animaux sauvages. Pokohinu (ou Burgess Island) abrite également le phare des îles Mokohinau, l’une des lumières les plus éloignées du continent. Le phare a été construit en 1883 et a été l’un des derniers au pays à être entièrement automatisé en 1980. (fr)
