Matema is a town in southwestern Tanzania. The town is primarily a fishing village with some agriculture. It is located on the northern tip of Lake Nyasa and is 90 kilometres (straight-line distance) south-east of Mbeya.In 2016 the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics report there were 10,304 people in the ward, from 17,103 in 2012.

Bahasa yang digunakan di Kota Matema adalah Bahasa Pileni yang juga dipakai di pulau-pulau yang dari kepulauan Pileni, yaitu Nupani, Nifiloli, Aua dan Nukapu dari Kepulauan Reef, maupun di Kepulauan Taumako (juga dikenal sebagai Kepulauan Duff), sekitar 200 mil di sebelah timur. * l * b * s (in) Matema ist ein kleiner Ort am Nordende des Malawisees in Tansania.Im Ort und der umliegenden Region leben laut dem Zensus von 2012 insgesamt 17.103 Personen. Von dort ist es über die Poroto-Berge und die Stadt Tukuyu kurz vor der Grenze zu Malawi, bei Kyela über eine Schotterpiste zu erreichen, die derzeit geteert wird. In der Regenzeit kann das Dorf unerreichbar werden. Matema liegt am Fuße der schroff aufragenden Livingstone-Berge in einer Ebene. Es ist ein Fischerdorf mit etwas Landwirtschaft.
