Léon Bottou (born 1965) is a researcher best known for his work in machine learning and data compression. His work presents stochastic gradient descent as a fundamental learning algorithm. He is also one of the main creators of the DjVu image compression technology (together with Yann LeCun and Patrick Haffner), and the maintainer of DjVuLibre, the open source implementation of DjVu. He is the original developer of the programming language.

Bottou ging in La Canourge, Clermont-Ferrand und Versailles zur Schule. Er studierte ab 1984 an der École polytechnique mit dem Diplom als Ingenieur 1987, erhielt 1988 einen Magister in Mathematik und Informatik von der École Normale Supérieure sowie einen DEA-Abschluss in Informatik und wurde 1991 an der Universität Paris-Süd in Informatik promoviert. Danach war er 1991/92 an den ATT Bell Laboratories in Holmdel in New Jersey und arbeitete dort mit Wladimir Wapnik an Lernalgorithmen. In Frankreich war er an der Gründung der Softwarefirma (Neuristique S.A.) beteiligt und war deren Chairman.
