Nach dem Besuch des St. James College machte Louis McComas 1866 seinen Abschluss am Dickinson College in Carlisle. Im Anschluss studierte er die Rechtswissenschaften, wurde 1868 in die Anwaltskammer aufgenommen und begann in Hagerstown zu praktizieren.
