Γεννήθηκε κοντά στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, από μητέρα Πολωνή και πατέρα Τούρκο, ο οποίος ήταν εύπορος επιχειρηματίας, ενώ η μητέρα του καταγόταν από Λιθουανική αριστοκρατική οικογένεια, η οποία έγινε και Μουσουλμάνα από Χριστιανή, μετά τον θάνατο του άνδρα της. Σε μικρή ηλικία έχασε και τον πατέρα της και μεγάλωσε στο Μεϊκόζ, κοντά στον Βόσπορο. Ξεκίνησε να σπουδάζει στο Ωδείο της Κωνσταντινούπολης, αλλά το άφησα γρήγορα για ιδιαίτερα μαθήματα, με την Giannina Arangi-Lombardi. Το 1946 παντρεύτηκε με τον τραπεζίτη Ιμπραχίμ Γκέντζερ, ο οποίος καταγόταν από οικογένεια του Ιπεκτσί. (el)
