Je známý jako průkopník aplikace matematických metod v oblasti meteorologie a díky pokusům o použití těchto metod v oblasti zabraňování vzniku válek. Je také známý díky své práci v oblasti fraktálů. Er berechnete die erste Wettervorhersage. Auch wenn sein Ergebnis weit vom tatsächlichen Wettergeschehen abwich, begründete er damit die Methode der numerischen Wettervorhersage. Einige seiner Erkenntnisse nahmen Ergebnisse der Chaostheorie voraus. Als überzeugter Quäker und Pazifist wechselte er in den 1920er Jahren in die Friedensforschung, in die er quantitative Methoden einführte. (de)
