Leonardus Achates de Basilea, born Leonhard Agtstein in Basel, was a compositor who worked from 1472 to 1491. He is one of the first to introduce the art of printing books in Italy. In 1472 he published a folio edition of Virgil in Venice. In the same year, he appears in Vicenza where he seems to have lived most of the time. In the meantime however, editions appeared in Padua and St. Ursus.

Leonardus Achates war ein Pionier des Buchdrucks in Italien. 1472 druckte er die Werke des römischen Dichters Vergil in Venedig, noch im selben Jahr erscheint sein Name in Vicenza. Hier war er längere Zeit tätig, doch finden sich auch Drucke aus Padua (1473) und St. Urso (1474). Nicht alle seine Drucke können ihm zweifelsfrei zugeschrieben werden. Sein spätester bekannter Druck datiert auf den 23. Dezember 1491. (de)
