- Unter Flächenverbrauch versteht man die Umwandlung insbesondere von landwirtschaftlichen oder naturbelassenen Flächen in „Siedlungs- und Verkehrsfläche“. Flächenverbrauch ist damit eine spezielle Form der Änderung von Flächennutzung, und zwar einerseits Verlust von landwirtschaftlicher Nutzfläche und natürlichen Lebensräumen, andererseits Erweiterung von Siedlungs- und Verkehrsflächen. Eigentlich wird die Fläche nicht verbraucht, sondern anders genutzt und „in Anspruch genommen“. Im immer dichter besiedelten Deutschland werden täglich rund 60 Hektar Landschaft für Gewerbe, Wohnungsbau, Verkehr und Erholungsflächen umgenutzt. (de)

* The expansion of built-up area which can be directly measured; 2.
* the absolute extent of land that is subject to exploitation by agriculture, forestry or other economic activities; and 3.
