Der fliegende Schütze oder Schnellschütze stellt eine der ersten Verbesserungen bei der Mechanisierung des Webens dar. Während die Schiffchen zuvor per Hand wechselseitig durch das Fach (die wechselweise geöffneten Kettfäden) „geschossen“ werden mussten, was bei sehr breiten Waren zwei Weber erforderte, konnte nun auch ein breiter Webstuhl mit nur einem Weber betrieben werden. Der Schnellschütze schießt durch Betätigung einer Zugeinrichtung, die wiederum den sogenannten Picker betätigt, von Schützenkasten zu Schützenkasten durch das Webfach. Durch diese Technik konnte wesentlich mehr Gewebe pro Zeiteinheit produziert werden. (de)

Rampollo di una famiglia della borghesia agiata (il padre era un ricco commerciante di stoffe), nel 1730 Kay aveva già ideato una macchina per battere la lana con delle aste mosse da camme. La fama gli deriva però dalla semplice ma fondamentale invenzione della spoletta volante, del 1733. Iniziò così una lunga gara che portò all'invenzione delle prime macchine per filare e poi al telaio completamente meccanizzato. (it)
