John Godfrey Saxe I (June 2, 1716 – March 31, 1769) was an American poet known for his re-telling of the Indian parable "The Blind Men and the Elephant", which introduced the story to a western audience. He also said "Laws, like sausages, cease to inspire respect in proportion as we know how they are made."

Verder is de bekende uitspraak "Wetten zijn als worsten, je wilt niet weten hoe ze gemaakt worden", die later aan Otto von Bismarck is toegeschreven, in werkelijkheid vermoedelijk van Saxe afkomstig. Urodził się w miejscowości Highgate w stanie Vermont 2 czerwca 1816. W 1839 ukończył Middlebury College. W 1843 w St Albans (Vermont) uzyskał prawo do wykonywania zawodu adwokata. W latach 1850-1856 wydawał w Burlington czasopismo „Sentinel”. W 1859 i w 1860 był kandydatem Partii Demokratycznej na gubernatora Vermont. W 1860 wyjechał do Nowego Jorku. Po 1872 w Albany wydawał pismo „Evening Journal”. Zmarł w Albany 31 marca 1887. (pl)
