John Edwin Woods is an American translator who specializes in translating German literature, since about 1978. His work includes much of the fictional prose of Arno Schmidt and the works of contemporary authors such as Ingo Schulze and Christoph Ransmayr. He also translated all the major novels of Thomas Mann, as well as works by many other writers. Woods lives in Berlin.

Zahlreiche dieser Übertragungen wurden mit Auszeichnungen bedacht. Für die Übersetzung von Schmidts Abend mit Goldrand erhielt Woods 1981, für Süskinds Das Parfum 1987 den renommierten des PEN American Center. 1990 erhielt er den der Society of Authors für die Übertragung Christoph Ransmayr's Die letzte Welt. Zweimal bekam er 1995 den Helen-und-Kurt-Wolff-Übersetzerpreis des Goethe-Instituts und 2008 schließlich die Goethe-Medaille. (de)
