- Iridium és una constel·lació de 66 satèl·lits de comunicacions que giren al voltant de la Terra en 6 òrbites baixes LEO a una alçada aproximada de 781 km de la terra i una inclinació de 86.4°. Cadascuna de les 6 òrbites consta d'11 satèl·lits equidistants entre si. Els satèl·lits triguen 100 minuts a fer la volta al món de pol a pol. Actualment, és propietat i és operada per l'empresa Iridium Communications. Aquest servei està prohibit per raons polítiques a Corea del Nord i Sri Lanka. Iridium Communications owns and operates the constellation, additionally selling equipment and access to its services. It was conceived by Bary Bertiger, Raymond J. Leopold and Ken Peterson in late 1987 (in 1988 protected by patents Motorola filed in their names) and then developed by Motorola on a fixed-price contract from July 29, 1993, to November 1, 1998, when the system became operational and commercially available. - Iridium est un système de téléphonie par satellite reposant sur une constellation de satellites circulant sur une orbite terrestre basse. Des ingénieurs de la société américaine Motorola créent Iridium en 1991 et lèvent des fonds permettant la réalisation du réseau terrestre ainsi que du segment spatial qui comprend environ 90 satellites (dont 66 actifs [Quand ?]). Mais Iridium ne parvient pas à attirer suffisamment de clients et la société dépose son bilan en août 1999. La société est reprise en 2001 par un groupe d'investisseurs privés. En 2015, Iridium dispose d'un peu plus de 800 000 abonnés et réalise un chiffre d'affaires d'environ 400 millions US$. La constellation de satellites d'origine est progressivement remplacée, à partir de 2017, par des satellites Iridium Next. (fr)
