| - Ian Watt (9 March 1917 – 13 December 1999) was a literary critic, literary historian and professor of English at Stanford University. His The Rise of the Novel: Studies in Defoe, Richardson and Fielding (1957) is an important work in the history of the genre. Published in 1957, The Rise of the Novel is considered by many contemporary literary scholars as the seminal work on the origins of the novel, and an important study of literary realism. The book traces the rise of the modern novel to philosophical, economic and social trends and conditions that become prominent in the early 18th century. He is the subject of an intellectual biography by Marina MacKay, Ian Watt: The Novel and the Wartime Critic (2018). (en)

- Ian Pierre Watt (* 9. März 1917 in Windermere; † 13. Dezember 1999 in Menlo Park) war ein Literaturkritiker und Literaturhistoriker. Ian Watt ging zur Schule an die Dover County School for Boys und am St John’s College in Cambridge. 1939, also mit 22 Jahren, trat er der britischen Armee bei und diente als , bis er im Januar 1942 in Singapur von der japanischen Armee inhaftiert wurde; er galt als „missing, presumed killed in action“; 1946 kehrte er nach England zurück und verließ die Armee. - Ian Watt nasceu em 1917, estudou em Cambridge, serviu na Segunda Guerra Mundial e foi capturado pelos japoneses durante a queda de Singapura, tornando-se prisioneiro de guerra no rio Kwai por três anos e meio. Trabalhou como professor, transferiu-se de Cambridge para a Universidade da Califórnia em Berkeley (1952-1962), depois para a Universidade de East Anglia (1962-1964) e finalmente para a Universidade de Stanford, onde foi professor-titular de inglês a partir de 1964.
