Hydrothorax is a type of pleural effusion in which transudate accumulates in the pleural cavity. This condition is most likely to develop secondary to congestive heart failure, following an increase in hydrostatic pressure within the lungs. More rarely, hydrothorax can develop in 10% of patients with ascites which is called hepatic hydrothorax. It is often difficult to manage in end-stage liver failure and often fails to respond to therapy.

Er tritt als Folge einer entzündlichen oder tumorösen Erkrankung des Brustfelles auf. Ist der Pleuraerguss eiweiß- und zellarm, so wird er als Hydrothorax (früher auch Brustwassersucht) bezeichnet. - Een hydrothorax is een abnormale toestand waarbij er vocht in de pleurale ruimte gelekt is, met als gevolg dat de long kleiner geworden is. De pleurale ruimte is de ruimte tussen het binnenste (viscerale) en het buitenste (pariëtale) longvlies (pleura). Normaal is deze ruimte leeg (een virtuele ruimte) op een dun filmpje pleuravocht tussen de longvliezen na. Normaal heerst er ook een onderdruk ten opzichte van de atmosferische druk.
