History: A Novel (Italian: La Storia) is a novel by Italian author Elsa Morante, generally regarded as her most famous and controversial work. Published in 1974, it narrates the story of a partly Jewish woman, Ida Ramundo, and her two sons Antonio (nicknamed "Ninnarieddu", "Ninnuzzu" or "Nino") and Giuseppe ("Useppe") in Rome, during and immediately after the Second World War. The Italian title La Storia can be translated as either "History" or "The Story"; the ambiguity is lost in translation.

I quartieri romani martoriati dai bombardamenti e le borgate di periferia affollate da nuovi e vecchi poveri (San Lorenzo, Testaccio, Pietralata, il ghetto ebraico di Roma) e le alture dei vicini Castelli Romani, in cui si muovono le formazioni partigiane di opposizione al nazifascismo e alcuni dei protagonisti della vicenda che scandisce la narrazione come un naturale fil rouge, vengono descritti con realismo, ma anche con una marcata visionarietà poetica.
