Gegründet wurde die Organisation 1993 anfangs als Projekt in Milwaukee von Will Allen, einem Farmer und ehemaligen NBA-Basketballspieler, sowie einigen Teenagern. Allen bot ihnen Arbeit an, und ihr eigenes Essen anzubauen, um damit die Gemeinde zu unterstützen. Growing Power setzte sich für eine nachhaltige, regionale Lebensmittelproduktion in Form von Nutzgärten, Aquaponik-Systemen (kombinierte Fisch- und Pflanzenzucht), Wurmkompostierung, Imkereien und Kleinviehhaltung in Städten ein. Ihr ging es um Soziale Gerechtigkeit, Ernährung und Umwelt. Sie setzte ihr Anliegen in Form von Mitmachkursen, Vorführsystemen, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und technischer Unterstützung um. Die Einrichtungen umfassten sieben große Gewächshäuser, eine Küche, Übungsgärten und Nahrungsmittelausgaben. Growing Power beschäftigte 140 Angestellte (Stand 2016) und wurde unterstützt durch rund 2000 freiwillige Helfer. Für seine Arbeit rund um die Urbane Landwirtschaft und nachhaltige Nahrungsmittelproduktion erhielt Allen 2008 von der MacArthur Foundation den mit 500.000 US-Dollar dotierten „Genie-Preis“. Die Organisation betrieb zudem auch andere Farmen wie beispielsweise in Madison (Wisconsin) und Chicago. Das Konzept von Growing Power fand zahlreiche Nachahmer. Die Einrichtungen verzeichneten jährlich tausende Besucher. Trotz der Erfolge der Organisation, die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Anliegen der städtischen Landwirtschaft und der kommunalen Ernährungssysteme zu lenken, war Growing Power nicht in der Lage, finanzielle Unabhängigkeit zu erreichen. Angesichts steigender Schulden und rechtlicher Herausforderungen stimmte der Vorstand von Growing Power im November 2017 für die Auflösung der Organisation. Nach der Auflösung von Growing Power gründete das Führungsteam der Filiale in Chicago das gemeinnützige Urban Grower's Collective, um das Erbe von Growing Power fortzusetzen. Its facilities included seven large greenhouses, a kitchen, indoor and outdoor training gardens, aquaculture system and a food distribution facility. Fish, worms, bees, goats, chickens, turkeys, and ducks were also raised there. Growing Power conducted workshops and demonstrations in aquaculture, aquaponics, vermiculture, horticulture, small or large-scale composting, soil reclamation, food distribution, beekeeping, and marketing. It also ran numerous collaborative projects and training projects, including a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee to train city youth in gardening, in addition to hosting interns year-round. The farm grew a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, and also farmed tilapia and perch through the use of aquaponics. Thousands of people toured the facilities every year. Growing Power was started by Will Allen, who bought the Milwaukee farm in 1993. Allen, a former professional basketball player, grew up on a farm in Maryland. In 2008, he was awarded a MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" for his work on urban farming, sustainable food production and with Growing Power. Despite the organization's successes in attracting attention to urban agriculture and community food systems causes, Growing Power was unable to attain financial self-sufficiency. Facing mounting debts and legal challenges, in November 2017 Growing Power's board of directors voted to dissolve the organization. Following the dissolution of Growing Power, the leadership team of its Chicago branch formed the nonprofit Urban Grower's Collective, to "continue the legacy of Growing Power." The Urban Grower's Collective was co-founded by Will Allen's daughter, Erika Allen. (en)
