Die meisten historischen Bauwerke in Cheshire sind aus Sandstein oder Backsteinen gemauert oder es handelt sich um Holzfachwerkbauten. Die Kirchen sind zumeist aus Stein gebaut, private Wohnhäuser überwiegend aus Backsteinen. Im östlichen Teil der Grafschaft wird teilweise auch Kalkstein verwendet. Der Anteil von Fachwerkbauten in Cheshire ist höher als in den meisten anderen Grafschaften Englands. Nikolaus Pevsner nennt Fachwerk-Kirchenbauten als Spezialität Cheshires und stellt fest, dass diese Bauten die frühesten ihrer Art in Europa sind. (de)
