The Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik (GST), lit. “Sport and Technology Association”, was one of the East German “Mass Organizations”. Officially, it was established to structure the free time of young people interested in sports and technology in group activities, provide the required technical equipment (for example, motorcycles, aircraft, radios), cultivate and support technical sport disciplines, and arrange for events like motor and shooting competitions. The association also contributed to the militarization of East German society by organizing together with the National People’s Army the country’s mandatory pre-military training (VA, vormilitärische Ausbildung) in schools, universities and workplaces.   • Die Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik (GST) war eine paramilitärische Massenorganisation der DDR, gebildet 1952 zur vormilitärischen Ausbildung für den „Schutz der Heimat“. Sie war nicht für Kampfeinsätze vorgesehen und ist daher nur bedingt zu den bewaffneten Organen der DDR zu zählen. Sie wurde Dachverband für Sportarten wie Sportschießen, Motorsport, Marine- und Seesport, Tauchsport, Segelfliegen, Funksport und Fallschirmspringen. Die GST war neben der Nationalen Volksarmee zuständig für die vormilitärische Ausbildung, die an Schulen, Universitäten und in den Betrieben durchgeführt wurde, wodurch die GST auch zur Militarisierung der Gesellschaft der DDR, zur Disziplinierung der Jugend und der Förderung der Wehrbereitschaft der Bevölkerung beitrug. De GST was een jeugdorganisatie die voor iedereen die in zijn/haar vrije tijd technische en sportgerichte interesse had. Ieder lid werd gevraagd zijn/haar technische middelen zoals motoren, vliegtuigen en radio-installaties in te zetten en zich met sport en de daarbij horende wedstrijden bezig te houden, zoals schietwedstrijden en motorraces.
