Od 1916 roku służył w 17 Pułku Huzarów. We wrześniu 1917 roku został przeniesiony do lotnictwa i po przejściu szkolenia w FEA 9 został skierowany do szkoły pilotów myśliwskich Jastaschule w Valenciennes.
