Michael "Galloping" Hogan was an Irish rapparee or brigand following the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. He was born in the parish of Doon, at the foot of the Slieve Phelim hills in East Limerick, and was possibly a relatively wealthy landowner before becoming a rapparee. Under his expert guidance in 1690, Patrick Sarsfield and 500 Jacobite troops blew up the Williamite siege train at Ballyneety, Co. Limerick. One eyewitness account says that Galloping Hogan was given the honour of lighting the fuse.

One eyewitness account says that Galloping Hogan was given the honour of lighting the fuse. The Williamite war continued until the Treaty of Limerick was signed in October 1691. But Galloping Hogan refused to accept the Treaty and carried on the struggle for a further six months before leaving Ireland from Cork in late Spring 1692 with the last contingent of Wild Geese. He went to France, where he became a general. In 1706 he was forced to leave France because of killing a fellow officer in a duel in Flanders, and fled to Portugal, where he continued his military career. Years later he ended his career as a senior officer in the Portuguese army. In May 1712 he contributed to the victory of the Portuguese Army against the Spanish at the battle of Campo Maior, Portugal. He remained in Portugal until his death, and reared a distinguished family whose descendants still live in Portugal. (en)

Dúirt duine a bhí ann gurbh é an tÓgánach féin a las an t-aidhnín. Lean an cogadh go dtí go ndearnadh Conradh Luimnigh i Mí Dheireadh Fómhair 1691, ach lean an tÓgánach air ag troid ar feadh sé mhí. D’fhág sé Éire i ndeireadh an Earraigh in 1692 nuair a d’imigh an chuid deiridh de na Géanna Fiáine. Chuir sé síos sa Fhrainc, áit a ndearnadh ginearál de. Ba den uasaicme an chuid ba mhó d’oifigigh na Fraince ag an am, agus bheadh air a chruthú gur bhain sé le huaisle na hÉireann. B’éigean dó an Fhrainc a fhágáil in 1706 agus oifigeach eile maraithe aige i gcomhrac aonair, agus bhain sé an Phortaingéil amach, áit ar lean sé air ina shaighdiúir. I ndeireadh a réime bhí céim ard aige. I Mí Bhealtaine 1712 bhí sé páirteach sa bhua mór a fuair Arm na Portaingéile ar na Spáinnigh i gcath Campo Maior. Fuair sé bás sa Phortaingéil agus tá a sliocht ann fós. (ga)
