Formation dance is a style of ballroom dancing. It is pattern or shadow team dancing by couples in a formation team. The choreography may be based on a particular dance or a medley of dances. Formation dancing may be done for exhibition or for competition between teams. There is also a type of formation in Bhangra.

- Een formatiedans is een stijldans in een formatie. Het formatiedansen moet worden gezien als stijdansen, alleen dan in teamverband. Een team van maximaal acht paren vormt al dansend de figuren op de dansvloer. Er zijn twee categorieën, namelijk standaard en Latin. Formatiedansen is een jurysport die ook geliefd is bij de niet dans-kenners door mede het showelement, zoals lifts dat wordt toegevoegd aan het dansen. Zehn-Tänze-Formationen, die alle zehn Standard- und Lateintänze tanzen, gibt es derzeit in Deutschland nicht. Dieser Artikel behandelt in erster Linie den Formationssport im Bereich der Standard- und Lateintänze, wie er vom DTV und der World Dancesport Federation (WDSF) reglementiert wird. Hier besteht ein Formationsteam aus mindestens sechs und maximal acht Paaren. Ein Turnier wird in der Regel mit acht Paaren bestritten. Sonstige Formationen, die Rock ’n’ Roll, Boogie-Woogie oder Jazz-Modern-Dance tanzen, werden in den Artikeln der jeweiligen Tänze behandelt. (de)
