The Federation of Women's Clubs for Oklahoma and Indian Territories was formed in May, 1898. The motto selected for the organization was "Kindliness and Helpfulness". The first president was Sophia Julia Coleman Douglas. The charter women's clubs were: Beginning in 1903, some women's clubs left the Federation of Women's Clubs for Oklahoma and Indian Territories to form the Federation of Women's Clubs of Indian Territory. Membership in the Indian Territories women's clubs typically had a majority Native American membership.
