The European Baccalaureate (or EB) is a bilingual educational diploma, which certifies the completion of secondary studies in a European School or Accredited European School by the Board of Governors of the intergovernmental organisation, "The European Schools". The diploma is awarded for the successful achievement of coursework and concomitant examinations which require that students take a minimum of 10 courses as well as be fully proficient in two languages. Students may take up to 14 courses. It is officially recognised as an entry qualification for Higher Education in all the member states of the European Union (EU), as well as in a number of others. La majoria dels estudiants són fills de persones que treballen de manera permanent o temporal en les Institucions de la Unió Europea de les ciutats on aquestes tenen la seua seu. Els estudis del batxillerat europeu permeten que els alumnes puguen incorporar-se a ell a mitjans de batxillerat des d'un batxillerat nacional i reincorporar-se posteriorment als estudis de batxillerat nacionals dels estats membres de la Unió Europea en cas necessari sense dificultats, ja que és compatible amb els dels Estats membres de la Unió Europea. Açò pot ser important en el cas d'alumnes que només realitzen una part dels seus estudis en les Escoles Europees o els alumnes de pares que realitzen funcions que els duen a canviar de país cada cert temps. Los estudios del bachillerato europeo permiten que los alumnos puedan incorporarse a él a mitad del bachillerato desde un bachillerato nacional y reincorporarse posteriormente a los estudios de bachillerato nacionales en caso necesario sin dificultades, puesto que es compatible con los de todos los Estados Miembros de la UE. Esto puede ser importante en el caso de alumnos que solo realizan una parte de sus estudios en las Escuelas Europeas o los alumnos de padres que realizan funciones que les llevan a cambiar de país de manera temporal.
