The city of Vilnius, now the capital of Lithuania, and its surrounding region have at various times come under Lithuanian, Polish-Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, German, and Soviet rule. The population has been categorised by linguistic and sometimes also religious indicators. At the end of the 19th century the main languages spoken were Polish, Lithuanian, Belarusian and Russian. Both Catholic and Orthodox Christianity were represented, while a large proportion of the city's inhabitants were Jews. The "Lithuanian" element was seen as declining, while the "Slavic" element was increasing.

  • Po przyjęciu chrześcijaństwa w 1387 roku nastąpił zwiększony napływ ludności polskiej na Litwę. Przybywali tam przedstawiciele polskiego duchowieństwa zakonnego i świeckiego, żołnierze, urzędnicy dworscy i mieszczanie. Wszystkie miasta litewskie uzyskały prawo magdeburskie i uległy całkowitej polonizacji w XVI wieku. W połowie XVI wieku nastąpiła też polonizacja magnaterii i szlachty litewskiej. Po rozbiorach, w 1796 roku polska szlachta i mieszczaństwo stanowiły 15,5% ludności guberni wileńskiej, polska była też znaczna część ludności chłopskiej.
