The British crown was a denomination of sterling coinage worth 1/4 of one pound, or 5 shillings, or 60 (old) pence. The crown was first issued during the reign of Edward VI, as part of the coinage of the Kingdom of England. "Decimal" crowns were minted a few times after decimalisation of the British currency in 1971, initially with a nominal value of 25 (new) pence. However, commemorative crowns issued since 1990 have a face value of five pounds.

Eingeführt wurde die Münze im Zuge der Währungsreform durch Heinrich VIII. im Jahre 1526. Die Crown war zunächst eine Goldmünze und hatte ein Feingewicht von 2,85 Gramm bei 3,11 Gramm Rauhgewicht. Aufgrund einer fortschreitenden Verschlechterung des Goldgehaltes wurde die Crown 1661 durch die Guinee ersetzt. Die Crown wurde als Großmünze nicht jährlich ausgebracht, traditionell jedoch stets im Krönungsjahr eines neuen Monarchen. (de) La corona (ingl. A partire dal 1818 sul rovescio apparve il noto disegno di Benedetto Pistrucci (1784-1855), che rappresenta la lotta di san Giorgio con il drago.
